The Presentation of Christ in the Temple (Candlemas)
40
days after Christmas the Church celebrates the day when, according to Jewish
custom and law, the infant Jesus was presented in the Temple in Jerusalem by
Mary and Joseph, as the firstborn son was to be dedicated to God. According to
St Luke, the infant Jesus was recognised by two old people, Simeon and Anna, as
God’s salvation, a light to lighten the Gentiles. We celebrate with the church
full of candles today.
