Growing in Faith

We grow in faith day by day and week by week by attending to God’s word and receiving Christ afresh into our lives. There are many opportunities to join with other growing in faith at St Stephen’s and at St John’s Cathedral, our mother church. Please email Will Newman@stjohnscathedral.org.hk about any of the following.

St Stephen’s in the City is an informal group that meets once a month on a Thursday lunchtime from 1-2pm in the David Kwok Room at the cathedral to discuss questions and matters of faith. Recent and forthcoming topics for discussion include:

Why and how we pray, and what we should pray for

Can you really move mountains through faith, and if not why not?

God’s creation is supposed to be good, so why is nature so cruel? (March 22nd)

The problem of evil (April 26th)

Anyone is welcome to bring a sandwich and come and join us.

We run a variety of evening courses for adults at the cathedral each year. In 2010-11 there have been:

a 4-week course on Prayer on Wednesday evenings, attended by 30-40 people

‘The Diversity Code’ from the Awareness Foundation in London on how Christians should respond to diversity in our world and people of other faiths

‘The Way of Faith’, an introductory course for new Christians, leading up to baptism and confirmation on Easter Eve.

Check the cathedral website for details of these and other future courses.

Interfaith exchanges are important in helping us to grow in faith, as we learn more about the beliefs and practices of others and think more clearly about our own faith. Each year there is an opportunity to visit the Kowloon Mosque, and there’s an Interfaith Celebration of Peace at the cathedral one Saturday afternoon in May. The Hong Kong Network for Religion and Peace holds monthly informal meetings for discussion between people of different faiths. If you’d like to join the mailing list please contact Will.
